Stitch of the Week Algerian Eyes

Here is a quick tutorial on the “Algerian Eye” (also called Algerian Eyelets) which is commonly found in hardanger patterns. It sounds complicated, but is really quite simple and very beautiful. The finished product resembles a simple snowflake or star.

Start in the corner by bringing your needle up from the bottom through the hole. (Make sure your thread is secured in the back to prevent pull through.) Count 4 holes (or 2 stitches) diagonally to find the center and push needle down into the hole.

Keeping your thread tight, count 4 holes over from the center and 4 holes down from point 1 and come up through the fabric at that point. Push the needle once again into the center.

Continue in a circular motion always counting 4 holes over and 4 holes in as you continue to make the star/snowflake shape.

The tighter you pull your floss, the larger the hole in the center will be.

You can create a row by placing them next to each other, or stacking them on top of one another.
