A number of years ago I fell in love with the antique perforated paper samplers hanging in several of our local museums. The sentiments are sweet, the lettering is beautiful, and the designs are unique. It has been my privilege to prepare five of them for cross stitch.

"What is Home Without a Mother" and "There's No Place Like Home" are counted cross stitch interpretations of antique perforated paper designs. As you work on these projects you will not find many of the same elements of modern counted cross stitch. There are very few letters that are identical, and the spacing between letters and lines is inconsisent. The beauty of these designs is found in its rhythm, balance, symmetry and sentiment.

Most perforated paper designs were completed in a long stitch using a single strand of variegated wool. The original which I used for "What Is Home Without a Mother" is unusual because it uses only four colors, and they are not variegated. The original of "There's No Place Like Home" has very strong and intense colors, and it was framed over a gold foil.

I have presented these designs in a way that allows you to select the way you want to complete the needlework. On the back cover you will see color pictures of the two originals and their corresponding likenesses. Also shown are two pillows, each completed using the blues, and with borders of hemstitching.
